# Own vs rent GPUs for AI startups

A multi-year GPU reservation bills every hour like owning does, and at the end you hand the GPUs back. Price any long commitment against owning.

A reserved GPU contract bills every hour of its term, used or not. At our October 2026 ballpark of $4.60 per GPU-hour for a 3-year B300 contract, 32 GPUs cost about $107K a month.

That is the same fixed commitment as owning, and at the end of the term you hand the GPUs back.

The worst case is the same either way: usage falls in year two and the bill keeps coming. Owned servers can then be rented out or sold. Keep spiky or short work on demand, and price any commitment longer than a year against owning.

## A 3-year reservation costs about what owning does

The two bills have the same shape. Reserved GPUs sitting idle cost the same as owned GPUs sitting idle, except the renter gives up the hardware’s resale value ([American Compute](https://www.amcompute.com/blog/tco-own-vs-rent-gpu-clusters)).

| | Reserve 32 B300 GPUs | Own 4 B300 servers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Up front | A deposit, due 30-60 days before the start | About $2.5M |
| Each month | About $107K | About $18K, data center and management |
| Over 3 years | About $3.9M | About $3.1M |
| Idle hours | Billed in full | Same running costs |
| At the end | Nothing | The servers, worth 28-39% of their price in 2029 |

Ballpark, October 2026. Reserved at our 3-year B300 contract rate of $4.60 per GPU-hour. Owning before insurance, sales tax, support contracts, and financing. Resale: the conservative band in our [residual value report](https://www.amcompute.com/blog/gpu-depreciation-residual-value-report-2026).

## Owning four B300 servers takes about $2.5M up front

A loan spreads that cash. Lenders advance 50-80% of equipment cost over 2-3 years, at 7-15% depending on your customer’s credit ([GPU Lenders](https://gpulenders.com/gpu-financing)). Without a signed customer, expect to put in about half.

- **4 B300 servers:** $2.2M, at $550K each
- **Cluster networking:** $220K
- **Shipping and setup:** $35K
- **Data center:** $17K a month
- **Management:** $1K a month

Ballpark, October 2026. Colocation at $280 per kW a month. Before insurance, sales tax, and financing.

## Owning wins only if the GPUs stay busy

Usage decides it. Our own-vs-rent analysis found ownership beats on-demand above about 77% utilization over three years ([American Compute](https://www.amcompute.com/blog/tco-own-vs-rent-gpu-clusters)). Below that, or for a few months of work, keep renting. Run your own usage in the [rent vs own calculator](https://managedgpus.com/rent-vs-own).

Most customers commit for one year. Providers sell two- and three-year terms too ([American Compute](https://www.amcompute.com/blog/tco-own-vs-rent-gpu-clusters)). A 1-year reservation lets you renew or walk away, while a 3-year equipment loan runs regardless, and both lock in today’s rate for their term.

Owning starts later. Procurement takes 8-12 weeks or longer, where a cloud delivers in days ([American Compute](https://www.amcompute.com/blog/tco-own-vs-rent-gpu-clusters)), and a factory B300 order can take five to six months.

Someone has to run it. The same analysis budgets $150K a year for one infrastructure engineer. We run the servers for management from $1K a month per 4 servers, after a $25K setup for 1-7 servers.

Owned hours you don’t need can earn. Spare servers can be listed on a GPU marketplace or rented to a customer; [renting out GPUs](https://managedgpus.com/guides/rent-out-gpus) covers the fees and what marketplaces require.

## Own vs rent questions

**Is it cheaper for a startup to own GPUs or rent them?**

Owning costs less when the GPUs stay busy, above about 77% of the time over three years in our analysis, and you can fund the hardware. For spiky usage or a few months of work, keep renting. The rent vs own calculator runs the break-even for your usage.

**Can we rent out the hours we don’t use?**

Yes, on a GPU marketplace or to a customer on a contract. A rented server is the renter’s until the rental ends, so list only capacity you can spare.
